The 20
year-old "Kimberley diamond" ANKE PIETRANGELI was crowned South
Africa's second 'Idol' last night during a glittering show at Gold Reef City in
Johannesburg. The gorgeous young singer possesses a sparkling vocal ability,
which she ably demonstrated as she heated up the packed Hippodrome venue on a
chilly Highveld night, edging out talented runner up Poseletso Sejosingoe of
Guguletu. Release Date : 2003-10-20
The final show featured many highlights, including two
performances by massively popular UK 'Pop Idol' runner up GARETH GATES, as well
as a guest appearance by last year's 'Idols' winner HEINZ WINCKLER. But on the
big night, it was ANKE who stole the show and proved her musical mettle with
superb versions of her song choice 'Unforgettable' and the judge's choice of
'Independent Love Song'. A high note was when ANKE then sang the specially
chosen track that will now become her debut BMG single entitled 'Silver Lining',
the CD of which will hit music stores later this week.
After consistently delivering the vocal goods and staying remarkably focused
over the six month long 'Idols' process, ANKE walked away with a major label
recording contract with BMG Africa, a R300 000 car, a top flight microphone, an
artist management deal, the freedom of Gold Reef City for a year, a pile of
Edgars clothing and a whole lot of other goodies...not bad for somebody with no
formal singing training, and who, like the vivacious Poseletso, had only
previously sung in church and at school.
But just who is ANKE, the young woman who has now been thrust into the media
limelight and whose life can never be the same? Well for one thing you don't
want to mess with her! The diminutive star, who cites her parents as role
models, is a Scorpio and a 2nd Dan Karate black belt! She's also a gifted hockey
player (and coach) for the Free State Technikon, where she's studying for a
Sports Management Diploma. ANKE will probably have to now put those studies on
hold as musical stardom beckons.
Convinced by her brother to enter 'Idols' and told by him to "just
sing", Anke was quoted on the show's official website some time ago as
saying: "I don't want my talent to go to waste and regret, one day when I'm
old, that I didn't take the opportunity to change my destiny". ANKE
PIETRANGELI certainly grasped the 'Idols' opportunity with both hands, and her
destiny is changed forever. You go girl!
